onkarBeechwood drew their latest match at home to a strong St Mary's side after a great fightback from the visitor's tail-enders saw them go from 134 for 8 to 197 for 9 before tea.

The home side made a good fist of chasing an unlikely victory, with Fraser Morris scoring an impressive 75, but in the end the total was a bridge too far and the hosts finished the innings on 157 for 4 and the day ended with honours even.

Match Report from St Mary's website:

A rare sight in South-East England was on display today – it rained. Not much, but we made a token effort to encourage it by coming off for 2 minutes at the start of play. Then an even more rare sight presented itself: not since Bradman was bowled by Eric Hollies in 1948 in his final test innings has there been such a silence around a cricket ground as this afternoon when Prudders holed out for a duck (and he lasted one fewer ball than Bradman).

Time for the rest of the line-up to show that Saints are not a one-trick pony, and they didn’t disappoint. Contributions right down the card, including the last two wickets who put on over 60 runs, ensured that the home side were going to be set a stiff challenge.

Beechwood are a canny side, and in spite of losing an early wicket, managed to survive the opening onslaught, and built a platform which could have launched them to victory. With ten overs to go, they needed another 87 runs with nine wickets in hand and two batsmen well set. Saints fought hard, however, winkling out the established batsmen, and in the end Beechwood hung on for a draw with most of Saints’ fielders around the bat.

The end of the winning run (but not the unbeaten run) but a good hard game of no-compromise cricket. Full marks to Skip for walking when he was the only one on the ground (including the umpires) who knew he’d got a nick through to the keeper, and well done to Prudders who took his 25th catch.
