Orchard Field, Otford

Plaxtol 187 for 9 (40 overs)

Beechwood 154 for 4 (36 overs)

With the impending tour and the gruelling schedule that accompanies it followed by the usual post-tour malaise, it came to be that I neglected to submit a report for the Plaxtol fixture which was of course quite remiss of me, and for which The DoC has not been shy of reminding me....on more than one occasion I hasten to add - there's a skipper in there somewhere, I'm sure of it!

Memories are naturally a little hazy so I won't ramble on as I usually might but I will start with saying it was great to have Scotty G back in our ranks, albeit for one whistle-stop afternoon. He waited until his second over before treating us to a beamer as well!

Apparently Plaxtol won the toss and batted first and a glimpse at the scorecard revealed they had an I. Harvey plus an A. Fraser in their ranks not to mention a David Frost so it was no surprise that they possessed more than a little cricketing nous and promptly posted a respectable 187-9 from their received 40 overs with Scotty bagging a couple of wickets on his return with Fraser and Hamish also weighing in with two apiece and Mark ably plugging the gap left by Ian's absence, chipping in with some handy overs and snaring one along the way and even Bradley got a pre-tour trundle too. Mark also pulled off one outrageous piece of fielding in front of the old nets, but as I recall even though Dave was his usual energetic self, Beechwood's fielding wasn't up to its usual standard although Tony, Steve, Hamish and Keith did each cling onto one during the course of Plaxtol's innings. Oh, and yours truly pulled up lame after an attempted sprint around the boundary to cut off some byes...well come on, there was a tour just around the corner after all....

Beechwood never really got ahead of the run chase to be fair but managed to get within thirty-odd of their total with Adrian and Hamish scoring some handy runs before the Austrian trip and Keith also had a going away present for Fraser in the shape of a raised finger! All this before Scott managed to get out to the middle for a couple of overs towards the end before Beechwood finished their innings on 154-4 from 36 overs.

An okay performance from the home side but if we're honest, we appeared to be marking time before heading off to the mountains in a few days’ time... understandably I suppose. The Ashes beckoned...
