Beechwood went down by seven wickets away to Groombridge on an overcast and damp Sunday.

The hosts won the toss and invited Captain Freeman's troops to bat first on a wet pitch, and it looked like a poor decision at first as Morris (42) and Warner (26) scored freely to get Beechwood off to a cracking start. But Groombridge clawed their way back and left the visitors faltering at one stage, until McCrea (46*) and Freeman (21*) batted superbly together to get Beechwood up to 178 for 4 at tea.

The run-chase was considered to be a tough one, but Groombridge had a real ace up their sleeve in left-hander Tom Erxleben, who made a classy 78 not out, and was ably assisted at the end by Smethurst (38*) who hit some mighty sixes to get the hosts home with some overs to spare.

Beechwood should not come away from this game too disheartened though, as despite having a tough time of it with the ball, batted excellently on the whole and should go into next Sunday's clash at home to Old Pilots with more confidence when using the willow.

Thank you as usual to Groombridge for being great hosts again, and it was good to see so many old familiar faces at the ground, although some of us wish they were still playing instead of the younger and athletic current crop!
