A makeshift Beechwood XI were given a tough examination by new opponents Bidborough at Otford, on a day given the forecast, everyone was delighted just to be given the chance to play.

With the rain clearing earlier than expected, the start time was delayed by just thirty minutes, and upon winning the toss, Capt Freeman decided to bat first in a timed game. Unfortunately the term 'timed game' can be interpreted by some as similar to a five day match, and the opening partnership limped along at a snail's pace, much to the disbelief of the fielding side and fury of certain umpires. The hundred came up with more than 33 overs bowled, and gave little chance to the rest of the batting order to pace their innings at all - this resulted in batsmen having to go from ball one and wickets tumbled. By tea, the home side had stumbled to 140 for 5.

Bidborough however did not find chasing a smallish total an easy one at first, due to some excellent bowling from Larry Culhane (1 for 14) and Chris Savory (3 for 25) who probably bowled his best spell of the season, flumoxing batsmen and wicket-keepers alike with his occassional wrong-uns.

It took two of the more senior(ish) Bidborough players to get the young visitors over the line, and they decided to do so in style smashing forty off four overs and causing McCrea and myself to once again contemplate retiring from all forms of cricket in honour of Chris Tremlett.

A good day was had despite the result (which is what Sunday cricket should be all about) - on the whole we have been playing much younger sides this season and have enjoyed watching some of the emerging talent coming through, knowing that the game of cricket is still in safe hands with the next generation.

A big thanks must also go to Rodger Poulsom and Clint Hillhouse for volunteering to swap sides for the day to get us up to eleven, and also to John Catterson and Mark Leadon for stepping in to help us as well, despite both having long journeys round the dreaded M25 and torrential rain.
