A fantastic day's cricket was had at Orchard Field on a good batting pitch against new opponents Plaxtol.

Captain Freeman won the toss and on a warm afternoon (with a few spots of rain in the air) elected to bat first. The scorecard showed many fine batting performances, with Russell Cartwright continuing his rich vein of form scoring 54 before completing his Beechwood initiation by being run out by Keith Makin (38). Brisk scoring from Hill (14) and Burgess (20) followed before a fine stand of 53 between Culhane (34*) and McCrea (29*) pushed the hosts up to 229 for 6 at tea.

Plaxtol struggled early on, and at one stage were 44 for 3. The feeling was though that some of the big guns were being held back and this was indeed the case as the Hollidays (Richard 41 and James 43) assisted the excellent Williams (100) as they began to rapidly accelarate at the call of twenty overs. All three results were very possible and kudos to Capt Freeman for holding his nerve and sticking with the spinners of myself (1 for 48) and Ian McCrea (4 for 83), as we kept the batsmen interested whilst creating chances.

It all came down to the last over and after five balls the scores were level. Plaxtol only needed to scramble a single and the game was theirs. However, it seemed that James Holliday wanted to win in style and charged down the pitch at McCrea, and nicked the ball through to Keith Makin who not only took the catch but tried to claim the stumping as well. The match was drawn!

All in all a brilliant game played against a very friendly team, we all enjoyed a beer or two in the pub garden afterwards and look forward to meeting our new friends again in 2016.
