After an excellent performance in the Velden Super Sixes over the weekend, which saw Beechwood get to the final where they lost to Velden, the tourists recorded a fine win against the home town in the final game of the tour in the more conventional 11-a-side version of the game.

Winning the toss and electing to bowl in the slightly less searing heat of the morning, the hosts got off to a good start before some decent, controlled bowling from Emlyn Bates and Scott Garnett put the brakes on the openers' rapid start and began to exert pressure on the run rate.  This brought wickets, despite several simple drops in the field, and Velden were eventually bowled out for 164 with nearly two overs to spare.

After another good lunch Beechwood opened with the vintage formula of Freeman and Makin, who did their job in repelling the very dangerous Velden opening bowling attack.   With the dangerous bowlers by and large having finished their eight over allocation, the path was cleared for Morris and Johnson to chase down the total with some controlled and classy batting, putting on a partnership of 104 to steer Beechwood home to a very satisfying victory.

Monday 27th June 2011, Austria Beechwood won by 6 wickets

38.1 overs

34.1 overs

Cooksley 2/9

Savory 2/16

Morris 60*

Johnson 38*
